West Med Development Geohazard Management

Project Overview

The West Med Development comprises the Abu Sir and El King fields in water depths ranging from 800m to 1100m, located approximately 50km off the coast of Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea.  The field development concept consisted of 6 initial wells tied back via a subsea production system to a new onshore gas processing plant approximately 35km East of Alexandria.

Consub performed the conceptual design of the field layout for the field development, which was then carried through to the data gathering (i.e. survey) and FEED stages.  The likelihood of encountering geohazards was identified at an early stage and managed by Consub throughout each stage of the project.

Desktop Study

The desktop study comprised a preliminary assessment of geohazards through a review of NALPETCO in-house data, public domain information, and the geohazard specialist’s knowledge of the area.  3D exploration seismic data of the area was assessed to identify faults and other features which would not otherwise have been identified until a reconnaissance geophysical survey had been performed.  This enabled the project to optimise pipeline routes early on, and to avoid the requirement for a reconnaissance survey. 

Survey Interface

The services of a geohazard specialist were used to assist in defining the scope of work for the geophysical and geotechnical surveys, and during the geophysical survey to assess potential geohazards and adjust the scope of the surveys accordingly. 

Front End Engineering Design

The services of the geohazard specialist were also used during FEED to perform the following studies:

·       Interpretation of survey data to identify possible geohazards.

·       Probabalistic Seismic Hazard Assessment.

·       Detailed sedimentational logging and age dating of geotechnical core samples.
